Canon’s smallest cameras, also known as subcompact/ultra compact cameras,
are less that 20mm thick. They also carry rugged, water resistant models which incorporate a retractable lens
assembly that allows this thin camera to have a somewhat long focal length and therefore exploit an image sensor
larger than that on a camera phone and a mechanized lens cap to cover the retractable lens.
Canon’s compact cameras are generally designed for ease of use which
tends to sacrifice advanced features and picture quality. To maintain a small size and ease of use, the pictures
taken are generally only stored using JPEG format. They have a built-in flash which, unfortunately, is not high
in terms of power but is adequate for objects in close range. Live preview is used to frame the picture and they
have limited motion picture capabilities.
Canon carries a range of low cost compact cameras but their
affordability and small size mean a weaker low-light performance based on image sensors which feature a diagonal
of about 6mm. Other resulting features are a great depth of field, close focusing ability and small components
than cameras using larger sensors.
One of the best Canon compact cameras is the Canon Powershot
S90. This camera is designed for serious photographers but it is also user friendly for amateurs.
It has excellent shooting capabilities which include a lot of Canon’s latest innovations. It also carries the
best controls you will find for equipment its size. This camera is a pocket-holder as it measures 3.94 inches
wide, 2.3 inches tall and 1.2 inches deep weighing 8 ounces when fully loaded. Also, its lens, which is wide
angle, and picture quality, is high end. In fact one of the mediocre qualities of the Powershot S90 is its
performance. If you are looking for digital SLR speed from a compact camera, won’t be impressed.
The lens features a control ring that can handle adjustments to
aperture, shutter speed, focus, zoom, white balance, exposure compensation or ISO. It’s simple to change
settings correctly as the ring turns with a clicking sound. This is a great feature for making quick adjustments
– not found with other compact cameras. One upsetting feature (for some people that is) is the fact that the
controls are close together.
It’s quality in low light scenes is great, however, the trade off is
that its slow on shooting capturing 1 frame per second- so action shooting is out of the question. Currently, it
runs for around $429 and higher.
The Powershot S90 has
the potential of becoming one of Canon’s most popular compact cameras. It’s super portable because of its size
but packs a lot of power as it relates to picture quality – even in low light. It’s versatile as it can be used
for nature, travel and landscape shots. Its shots are slow though so those sports and other action shots are not
suitable for this camera.
